• A phone interview is still an interview, so be ready! Phone interviews are becoming more and more common, so it is important to be prepared. When expecting a call from an employer, you need to keep the necessary materials handy. You should keep information you’ve gathered about the employer and a copy of your resume by the phone for quick reference. Also, make sure you are in quiet surroundings by turning of any TVs or stereos that may be nearby. Also, if possible, turn off the call waiting function on your phone so that other calls don’t interrupt your interview. Just like any other interview, be ready with solid, on the point responses and always project a positive attitude.

• Be ready with your own questions for the interviewer! In most interview situations there comes a time when the interviewer asks, “Do you have any questions?”. The worst answer you can give is “No.”. You should use this question time as another opportunity to stand out from your competition. When asking questions about the company or the position, try to phrase them like you already have the job. For example, you might ask, “What will my daily routine be like in this position?”. This projects a sense of confidence and also makes the employer picture you as an employee. Don’t use this question time to ask about pay. Questions about pay are better left until after the job has been offered. If used correctly, asking questions will show the interviewer that you are eager to learn about the company and help you prepare for a second interview.
